Denominations Of The American Gold Eagle Coins

The coins have both a face value and a value that is determined by the current market value of the gold content that they contain. The denominations of these bullion coins are as follows.

$5 (1/10oz of gold)
$10 (1/4oz of gold)
$25 (1/2oz of gold)
$50 (1oz of gold)

The US Mint produces two versions, with one being the more collectible proof version of the coin.

While the American Gold Eagles are produced by the United States Mint, they are not sold directly to the public. They can, however, be purchased from select traders and banks. The US Mint also produces platinum and silver bullion ones that are just as ornately designed as their gold counterparts.

On its initial year of debut, the 2006 American Buffalo gold coin was valued at approximately 800 US dollars. Currently, the now famous coin has a face value of about 50 US dollars. This is due to the fact that in 2005 the Presidential One Dollar Coin Act was enacted and responsible for the production of this gold proof coin by requiring a coin be made with a face value of 50 US dollars and a content of 1 oz of 24-karat gold. Only 300,000 of these 2006 American Buffalo gold coins were ever minted. Furthermore, the government enforced another limit of only 10 coins per household allowed which instantly made them a highly sought after collector's item.

The American Buffalo gold coin design was inspired from the well known Indian Head nickel, which was originally created in 1913 by James Earl Fraser. There were very minute changes made to the original nickel. For example, some of the mound of earth below the buffalo's hooves were decreased to give it a cleaner look. The conception of the Indian Head nickel is widely known as one of the most attractive creations to ever be used on any US government minted gold proof coins.

At the front of the coin you can see a picture of a Native American Indian. The head is facing the right side and he also has a feather on the top of his head. Imprinted on the upper right corner of the gold coin is the word "Liberty" and the date, that the coin was minted, can clearly be seen on the lower left side where his shoulder is. A little known fact about the model that was used for the 2006 gold coin by the artist James Fraser is that he actually had 3 different Native Indian Chiefs pose for him while he was in the process of designing the gold coin. The names of these three Native Indian Chiefs were Iron Tail, Big Tree, and Two Moons. James Earl Fraser borrowed features from all 3 of these great chiefs to complete his intricate design of the American Buffalo gold bullion coin.

1907 $20 gold piece was the master template for the digitally reproduced and minted 2009 Double Eagle coin. Augustus Saint-Gaudens designed 1907 $20 Double Eagle has often been described as "the most beautiful coin ever minted."

Through 21st century technology and the vision of Director Ed Moy, original Saint-Gaudens coin plasters were digitally mapped by the United States Mint. Using the digital design and die-making process, the Saint-Gaudens sculpture—in ultra high relief—has been updated to reflect the year 2009, an additional four stars to represent the current 50 states, and the inscription "In God We Trust," which was not on the 1907 version.

Additionally, a small border was added for a more consistent edge. The 2009 coin is made of 24-karat gold. Pure 24-karat gold is much more malleable than 22-karat or 90% gold coins, making it better material for striking the ultra high relief.

The 2009 Ultra High Relief Double Eagle Gold Coin closes one chapter of American coin design and begins a new one. The coin is a uniquely American artistic expression—created by an American sculptor and crafted by an iconic American institution.

Appreciating his works President Theodore Roosevelt chose him to be the one to design the new American gold coins. The purpose of this change was to bring more beauty to the older image of Liberty. That is how in 1907 the first double eagles have emerged for the world to look at them with admiration. These coins are made with outstanding artistry and they have a face value of $ 20. The same year he also designed the Indian head gold eagle with a face value of $ 10.

Like all the coins meant to be circulated these two have a purity of gold of 90%. The alloy includes copper in amount of 10%. But what is more amazing is the detailed design. The most beautiful of them is considered to be the double eagle. The obverse of the coin is adorned with a beautiful woman, representing Lady Liberty. She carries a torch to light the way towards freedom and an olive branch, the traditional symbol of peace. On the reverse you can see the image of a flying eagle, backed by sun rays. The words "In God we trust" are also engraved on this side of the coin.

The Indian head gold eagle received its name because of its design. The head of an Indian man is carefully designed on the obverse of the coin, in a manner reminding much of classic Greek art. Thirteen stars are placed above his face to represent the thirteen colonies which contributed to the formation of the U.S.A. Connected to that idea is the motto "E pluribus unum" marked on the reverse of the coin. It stands for the fact that this nation is the result of the unification of several states. This motto is accompanied by the majestic American eagle on the very point of taking his flight.

Unlike the British gold sovereigns these coins were discontinued in 1933. Although Lady Liberty as viewed by St Gaudens appears on other pieces, the entire coins were never minted again.

Philadelphia Mint - The primary US Mint facility was located in the US' first capitol, Philadelphia. The US Mint Philadelphia facility was opened in 1793. A newer facility was established in 1969 and is still the country's primary mint facility and is responsible for the production of master die used for coinage designing and production.

San Francisco Mint - The first West coast gold coins contain an S marking to signify the fact that they were minted by the San Francisco mint. The demand for gold coins derived from gold metals found during the Gold Rush coast prompted the creation of the San Francisco mint, which produced over $4 million in gold coinage during its first year.

Denver Mint - Opened in 1863 as a response to the Pikes Peak Gold Rush. The mint liquidized, assayed and stamped gold brought in from the local mining areas. By 1906, the Denver mint had reserved enough gold and begun minting $20 Double Eagle gold coins. Standard Eagle, Quarter Eagle and Half Eagle gold coins were also done at Denver in smaller amounts. All Denver gold carries the D mintmark and original gold coinage retains significant value.

Carson City Mint - One of the few mints opened primarily for silver minting purposes. The Carson City mint began minting coins in 1870 using silver and gold from the large Comstock Lode mining facility. All gold coinage from the Carson City mint facility bares a CC mintmark. CC mint marked gold coins include various Eagle gold coins designed by Christian Gobrecht and even the very rare 1876 $0.20 cent piece.

West Point Mint - Established in 1937, West Point was only identified as a legitimate branch of the US Mint in 1988. The West Point Mint originally focused largely on silver minting and is largely known for its production of non-mint marked Lincoln cents from 1873 to 1986. The West Point W mark did not appear until 1983, when it was placed on the $10.00 Los Angeles Olympic Games commemoration gold coins.

Gold coins from the early years retain the most value due to their scarcity. Other valuable coins are appraised by their limited production, some of which have only been produced in runs of 50 coins or less as exclusive gifts. In the early 1900’s, President Theodore Roosevelt inquired of sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens as to whether or not he would be interested in re-crafting the design or the nation’s coinage to look more like the coins of ancient Greece, where democracy first took root.

What Saint Gaudens created was a breathtaking high relief design featuring the image of Miss Liberty on one side and a flying eagle on the other. This coin symbolized both the county’s strength while moving into the future and independence as a powerful and glorious nation.

The President had some artistic friends who encouraged him to have it re-done. "I think our coinage is artistically of atrocious hideousness," President Theodore Roosevelt wrote in a note to Secretary of the Treasury Leslie Mortier Shaw on December 27, 1904, and then continues, "Would it be possible, without asking permission of Congress, to employ a man like Saint-Gaudens to give us a coinage that would have some beauty?"

President Roosevelt commissioned the sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens for the task of coming up with a new design. Saint-Gaudens accepted this assignment, but was so terribly busy that he only had time to sketch out some rough ideas on a paper napkin while making the train trip from Washington. He had told President Roosevelt that he would need to have his associate, Adolf A. Weinman, to do most of the actual work on the design. Collectors today will probably know Weinman for his work on the Mercury dime and the Walking Liberty Half Dollar.

Several modifications of the initial design were made for reasons of minting problems and the $10 Indian Head Gold coin was finally released to the public. There were 239,406 of these that were put into circulation in the fall of 1907. They continued using this last design until the early part of 1908.

Indian Head Eagles are 26.80 mm in diameter, weigh 16.718 grams and are composed of .900 fine gold. The reverse depicts a standing eagle, wings slightly spread, regal in appearance. The obverse depicts Lady Liberty wearing a Native American war bonnet. The edge of the coin is unique decorated with 46 raised stars for the 46 current states in the union at the time instead of the typical reeded edges that had become so common.

President Roosevelt strongly felt that using the words In God We Trust was blasphemous so they did not appear on these new coins at first. So there were 33,500 of these coins made in Philadelphia, and another 210,000 in Denver that did not have those words on them in 1907 and 1908. However, Congress was not happy with this decision and insisted that the words be put back on the coins. In 1908 they appeared to the left of the eagle on the back side of the $10 Indian Head Gold coin. The mint marks for Denver (D) and San Francisco (S) appear to the left of the bundle of arrows the eagle is standing on. There is no mint mark for $10 Indian Head Eagles produced in Philadelphia.

While there were regular issue coins that were made at all of the mints from 1908 to 1911, and then in 1914, only Philadelphia and San Francisco Mints made eagles in 1912, 1913 and 1915. They were made only in San Francisco in 1916 and 1920.

As far as collecting goes, there have been a few of both the 1930-S and the 1933 $10 Indian Head Gold coins that have shown up periodically. If you are looking for scarce and rare coins to add to your collection, you will want to search for the ones with 1909-D, 1911-D 1913-S, 1915-S and 1920-S. All of these coins are rare, especially in mint state condition. So you are a lucky collector if you find any of them. Common date Indian Head Eagles are widely available in mint state certified condition at reasonable prices. The $10 Indian Head Eagle was well received when introduced to the public in 1907 and continues to be popular with collectors today.

This $5 US gold coin is a must have for any ardent coin collector. It is one of the most popular items for coin collectors all over the country. The reason for this is that the Half Eagle was the very first golden coin ever struck by the US mint for circulation. It undeniably holds immense historical value that surpasses the value of its coin descendants.

The $5 Liberty Head Half Eagle, also called the $5 Coronet, enjoyed one of the longest reigns in US Coinage history with its circulation beginning in 1839 up until 1908. That is a 69-year circulation, considered a long run for any US gold coin. The Half Eagle was said to have been the "workhorse" of the US economy during that era.

In addition to its great historical worth, what makes the Half Eagle more important is that it stands to be the only coin in US history that was produced at all seven of the branch mints operating during its reign. These branch mints in particular are that of Philadelphia, Charlotte, San Francisco, Dahlonega, Carson City, Denver, and New Orleans.

The US Mint was authorized by Congress to coin this $5 Half Eagle on the 2nd of April, 1792. The very first design of the Half Eagle was termed the Capped Bust to the Right, Small eagle. And just like the Quarter Eagle, it also went through several changes in design and content throughout its existence and production.

In the obverse of the $5 Half Eagle is the inspiring and dominant feature of Lady Liberty, whose magnificent golden hair is adorned with a string of beads. The world 'liberty' is engraved on the coronet that sat at the top of her head. Encircling Liberty's portrait are the date as well as a star that stood for each of the thirteen original colonies during that era.

On the reverse side of Lady Liberty is a proud bald eagle, labeled popularly as the 'Heraldic Eagle'. Its wings are spread apart, and it is standing among olive branches, clinching three arrows in his talons. The Heraldic Eagle also has a shield with stars and stripes adorned on its chest. Surrounding the eagle are the words 'UNITED STATES OF AMERICA', the mint mark and the denomination of the gold coin.

The original make-up which was designed by Robert Scot and held a weight of 8.75 grams, coupled with a gold purity of .9167 or less than one ounce. However during the year 1937, the $5 coin was struck from .900-fine gold.

One of the last and final designs of the $5 Half Eagle was done by Christian Golbrecht, assistant Engraver to his superior, William Kneass. His version was minted beginning in 1839 and lasted until 1908, when the $5 Indian Head gold coin was introduced.

But for the Liberty version of this gold coin there have been 3 different versions of it minted and these are as follows:-

1. Liberty Head with no motto but with a value on it of "Twenty D." and was produced between 1849 and 1866.

2. The Liberty Head with a motto and its value again showing as "Twenty D." and this one was minted from 1866 until 1876.

3. The final version of the Liberty Head gold coin to be minted between 1877 and 1907 again had a motto on it but the value showing on it was "Twenty Dollars".

As for the Saint Gaudens Double Eagle Gold Coin which began being minted in 1907 the 3 versions available of this are as follows:-

1. The 1907 version of the coin had a high relief, no motto and Roman numerals were used on it.

2. The 1907 to 1908 version of the Saint Gaudens coin instead of a high relief came with a low one and again had no motto but instead of using Roman numerals, Arabic ones were used instead.

3. Whilst the 1908 to 1933 Saint Gaudens coin again had a low relief and Arabic numeral s as the 1907 and 1908 versions did but came with a motto now.

For some reason in 1933 the then President of the United States of America, Franklin D Roosevelt chose to stop the coinage of gold and because of this it became illegal for people to own such metal. However collectors of coins were actually able to retain the ones they already had and except for one time no Double Eagle Gold Coins were ever legally released that were made in 1933.

However some of the coins that were actually minted at this time were stolen from the US Government and in the intervening years many have been recovered. Yet in 2002 one of these 1933 Double Eagle Gold Coins was put up for sale at an auction. The lucky person who purchased the coin paid $7,590,020 (US Dollars) for it.

Previous to this the highest price ever paid for any old coinage was $4,140,000 for an 1804 Silver Dollar. The reason why this particular Double Eagle Gold Coin reached its vast auction sum because it is only one now that the US Government has deemed legal for a person to own. But just because this one sold for such a vast sum unfortunately no others are likely to go for this kind of money and can not be legally sold as they have not been deemed as being legal by the US Government.

America in 1908 was a nation in the midst of wide ranging social and economic change. Headlines of the day sound like they were ripped right from today's news. New Years Day was celebrated by the famous ball dropping for the first time in New York's Times Square. And the new $5 Indian Head Half Eagle gold coin, as well as its smaller sibling the Quarter Eagle, debuted in November 1908 to great controversy.

President Theodore Roosevelt had determined it was time for the nations coinage to change and become more beautiful. The well known sculptor Bela Lyon Pratt designed the obverse and reverse for the Half Eagle as well as the smaller Quarter Eagle. And the design was controversial from the start. It didn't look like the typical American gold coin with its incuse, or sunken, design. Complaints were made that the portrait of the Native American model appeared emaciated. Banks complained the gold coins were difficult to stack and would be too easy to counterfeit. It was even claimed by some that the coins design would harbor dirt, germs and disease making them a hygiene problem, all of which proved untrue.

Roosevelt let the coins production move forward as planned despite the complaints and the complainers. The $5 Indian Head Half Eagle production lasted only a few, short years from 1908 through 1916. It was resurrected once again in 1929 with a production run of just 662,000 pieces but the majority of those were destroyed before ever leaving the mint. It was the last time a $5 Half Eagle gold coin was to be minted for circulation in the United States. From the time American gold coins were first minted in 1795 to 1916 the $5 gold coin only missed production in 3 years, 1801, 1816 and 1817. It was one of the most successful denominations produced by the U.S. Mint.

Today, the $5 Indian Head Half Eagle is one of the most popular collectible American gold coins. It is relatively inexpensive when compared with its big brother, the $20 St. Gaudens Double Eagle.

The obverse features a proud Native American facing left and wearing a War Bonnet. Around the obverse are 13 stars and the word LIBERTY featured at the top. At the bottom is the year produced and just above the year are the initials of Bela Lyon Pratt. A standing Eagle dominates the reverse of the coin standing on a bundle of arrows. Around the circumference is UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, to the left of the Eagle is E PLURIBUS UNUM, to the right the motto IN GOD WE TRUST. Physically the coin is 21.60 mm in diameter, weighs 8.359 grams and is .900 pure gold. There are key dates that stand out in this series. Obviously 1929 is one, followed by the 1909-O and 1911-D.

Because of its design it is somewhat difficult to be graded correctly, especially by those unfamiliar with its unique incuse design, because it doesn't have the traditional high spots where you'd normally look for wear. That's why it's important to look for coins that are graded by either PCGS or NGC, or that you know and trust the person from where you are purchasing the coin.

These beautiful American gold coins enjoy a very strong following and sell quickly, especially in certified mint state or about uncirculated condition. They are a great addition to anyones coin collection. The $5 Indian Head Half Eagle is far more popular today than during the time it was produced.

So Why Would Someone Spend So Much Money on a Gold Coin?

The US Mint, which makes coins to be circulated as currency produced over 400,000 double eagle gold coins but none of them ever made it into circulation. It was President Roosevelt that made a decision during the Great Depression to change the currency laws to make it illegal for private citizens to own gold coins. The only gold coins that were allowed were coins that had collectible value. At this time all gold coins were taken out of circulation and melted down as a way of stabilizing the economy. The government felt that in order to solve the problems in the economy, it was necessary to limit gold so that people would not hoard it, causing inflation and more economic uncertainty.

All the 1933 Gold Double Eagles were melted down before they were ever circulated and made into gold bars. As far as everyone at the mint was concerned, not a single 1933 Double Eagle Coin was left in existence with the exception of 2 that were donated to the Smithsonian to put on display. As the years passed rumors circulated that there were a few 1933 Double Eagles that survived and the US government enlisted the help of the Secret Service to track them down. By 1952 the Secret Service succeeded in finding 8 Double Eagles that had not been melted down. It turns out that a cashier working for the mint was responsible for switching an unknown number of 1933 Double Eagle Gold Coins, thus allowing them to survive the melting process.

After the seizure of the 8 double eagles, another collector somehow came to own 19 of the 1933 Double Eagle Gold Coins, which he then sold 9 of them to the King of Egypt. Once it was discovered by the Secret Service that the sale of these coins had taken place they tried to confiscate them from the King. They failed in their attempt as he had purchased the coins before ever knowing that there might be an issue with them.

After the coins were longer in the possession of the King, these coins briefly on the market again, but after learning that the Secret Service was still hot on their trail, they mysteriously disappeared once again.

No one saw any 1933 Double Eagle Gold Coins for more than 40 years when they became available in New York. Believe it or not, the Secret Service once again got involved and seized the coins and stored them in the World Trade Center Vault while legal proceedings took place to determine the fate of the coins. Just a few months before 9/11, the coins were moved to Fort Knox while awaiting the courts decision. After a lengthly court battle a compromise was made and the owner of the coins was allowed to sell them if he split the proceeds with the US Mint. A single 1933 US Double Eagle Gold Coin went to auction and the winning bidder paid 7.5 million dollars for the opportunity to own such a wonderful piece of history.

This fabulous story doesn't end there. In 2004 the collector that originally sold the coin for 7.5 million passed away and among his belongings another 10 1933 Double Eagle Gold Coins were found! Without knowing the significance of the find, the heir to his assets sent the coins away to the US Mint to be verified and the Secret Service once again seized the coins. The coins are now held by the Secret Service awaiting yet another long legal battle to determine their fate.

"Due to the unprecedented demand for American Eagle gold one-ounce bullion coins, our inventories have been depleted. We are therefore temporarily suspending all sales of these coins," the U.S. Mint told authorized coin dealers in a memorandum dated on Friday.

"We are working diligently to build up our inventory and hope to resume sales shortly," the Mint said.

Coin dealers from the United States to Canada reported a surge in buying of bullion coins and other gold products since prices plummeted from highs last month. The buying spree contributed to supply fears and helped boost gold prices sharply on Thursday.

The move by the U.S. Mint to halt sales caught market participants by surprise as it came at a time when the metal was sharply falling, rather than rising.

Produced from gold mined in the United States, the American Eagles have been novel items among collectors and investors since their introduction in 1986. Each coin has a face value of $50 but it is sold by authorized dealers at a premium to the price of gold.

Blanchard and Co., one of the largest U.S. retail dealers of rare coins and precious metals, said the American Eagle and American Buffalo one-ounce gold coins are sold out.

They were basically designed to add value to an investor's portfolio and physical amounts of gold, silver, and platinum into their investments. They both had their familiar designs with some unique features added on the obverse while the reverse field had been brilliantly frosted, which has made this set enormously popular with collectors and quickly sold out to add even more popularity to the American Eagle Coins.

These coins have attracted the collectors everywhere with its version of "Legislative Muse" in 2006. This astonishing coin shows the muse looking away from the law that she has just inscribed as she is seated between the two bodies of Congress, the House of Representatives and the Senate, represented by Corinthian columns.

All American Eagle Gold Proof Coins are legal-tender and contain 91.67% (22 kt) gold. The difference from the 91.67% to 100% relate to the additional alloys needed to harden the coin. Gold alone is too soft.

Coins are available in one ounce, half-ounce, one-quarter ounce, and one-tenth ounce. Each coin denomination will affect the size, and weight of the gold coins.

* The one ounce coin carries a $50 face value, is 1.287 inches in diameter, contains one gold troy ounce and weighs 1.0909 troy ounces.

* The one-half ounce coin has a $25 face value, is 1.063 inches in diameter, contains 0.5000 gold troy ounces and weighs 0.5455 troy ounces.

* The one-quarter once coin has a $10 face value, is 0.866 inches in diameter, contains 0.2500 gold troy ounces and weighs 0.2727 troy ounces.

Double eagle coins were first minted in 1850 and were used to settle accounts between banks and other financial institutions.

Specialists believe that the double eagle found in Egypt could be part of Theodore Roosevelt's 1933 collection of coins redesigned by famed American sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens and given to King Farouk of Egypt as a present.

The US Gold Eagle is available in four different denominations: 1/10 ounce, ¼ ounce, ½ ounce and 1 ounce of pure gold. The coin is guaranteed to contain the amount stated. Lady Liberty graces the opposite side of the US Gold Eagle coin in her full glory with long flowing hair, a flaming torch in her right hand, an olive branch in her left. Behind her, you can see the Capitol Building. Augustus Saint-Gaudens created the portrait of the Statue of Liberty, bordering her with fifty patriotic stars. A large majority of the gold from Sutter's Mill ultimately found its way to the United States Mint in Philadelphia, where it was issued into larger denominations instead of the traditional $10 gold pieces. Congress authorized the issue of the $20 gold coins in February of 1849, which were designed by an extremely creative James Barton Longacre.

The first of two trial patterns was struck on March 12, 1850, but it still carries the date of 1849. Originally there were two patterns designed, but the second pattern has never been found. They have been given the nickname of "double eagles" due to the fact that $10 coin is called an "eagle" and were issued between the years of 1850 and 1907.

President Theodore Roosevelt together with sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens joined efforts to redesign the $10 and $20 "eagles" by bringing some ancient Greek beauty to the coins. On December 22, 1907 the work on the new $20 "double eagle" began featuring an advanced figure of "Lady Liberty" on the obverse and a flying bald eagle on the reverse. The new design required a much longer striking process so that there were few of released in December of 1907. Soon new dies were created to increase the circulation of these amazing coins from 1907 to 1933.

Following World War I through out the world there was financial instability that seemed to be encouraged by individuals hoarding gold, which basically affected the United States gold reserves. The problem became compounded in the 1930's by the general bank crisis that led to the banks closing on March 6th through March 9th. Then on March 9, 1933 President Franklin D. Roosevelt succeeded with the "Emergency Bank Relief Act" and then again in January of 1934 with the "Gold Reserve Act" by putting an end to these crises banks were opened, but the gold vanished.

Then in 1933 President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed the "Gold Confiscation Act" that made it illegal for private citizens to own gold. It also put an end to all circulation and any private possession of any United States gold with the exemption of gold coins that had a recognized value to collectors of rare and unusual coins". In late 1934, a recall of the 1933 $20 "double eagle" coins was issued and they were to be melted down, however, some still survived and are now hunted by every avid coin collector. The 1934 "double eagle" is also the most expensive of the American Eagle Coins.

The first release by the United States Mint, which was authorized under the Gold Bullion Coin Act of 1985, was in 1986 making the American Gold Eagle the very first modern bullion coin to actually be authorized by the United States Congress, and it is backed by the United States Mint for its weight, content, and purity. The law of December 17, 1985 created the American Gold Eagle Bullion Coin series and through this law the gold for these coins must come from newly-mined sources within the United States with an additional alloy of silver and copper to produce a more wear resistant coin of .9167 (22 karat), which helps to increase the stability and scratch-resistance of these beautiful coins.
